How the CELPIP score calculator works
You enter the four levels printed on your CELPIP-General score report, one for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The calculator gives you three things back.
Your CLB per skill. This is the part that surprises people: it is the same number you typed in. More on that below.
Your average. Useful for tracking progress over time, but be careful with it. CELPIP does not report an overall score, and averaging four levels can flatter a profile that has one weak skill in it.
Your lowest skill. This is usually the number that matters. A profile of 10, 10, 10 and 7 is a 7 profile, because organizations look at all four levels rather than the mean. The three tens do not rescue the seven, which is why the calculator points you at your weakest skill rather than congratulating you on your average.
CELPIP to CLB conversion table
For CELPIP-General, the CELPIP level and the CLB level are the same number, in every skill, from level 3 to level 12. There is nothing to convert. This is genuinely unusual: other designated language tests need a real lookup table, where a single CLB level corresponds to different scores in different skills. CELPIP does not.

The only place the one-to-one rule breaks is at the very bottom of the scale. CELPIP is aligned to the Canadian Language Benchmarks from CLB 3 to CLB 12. Below that, level 2 covers CLB 1 to 2, and levels 0 and 1 have no CLB equivalent at all.
How CELPIP scoring works
Each of the four skills is scored independently and gets its own level, so it is entirely normal to be a 9 in one skill and a 6 in another.
Listening and Reading are computer-scored. Each has 38 scored questions, worth one point each, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is always worse than a guess. Your raw score out of 38 is converted to a level: see the CELPIP Reading score calculator and the CELPIP Listening score calculator to work out what a given number of correct answers is worth. The two use different charts, so the same raw score is not the same level in both.
Writing and Speaking are rated by trained human raters, not by a machine. Both are judged on four dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Task Fulfillment, and then Readability for Writing or Listenability for Speaking. Paragon says each Speaking performance is rated by three to five raters, working independently.
This split is worth knowing when you plan your study. Listening and Reading reward technique and timing, and improve quickly. Writing and Speaking are judged by people on things like organization and tone, so they move more slowly but respond well to structure.
