What is CELPIP Reading Part 2?
A diagram (a schedule, a floor plan, a map, an advertisement) sits beside a related message. Your job is to apply the information in the diagram to the message.

The first five require you to complete an email using facts read off the diagram. The final three are comprehension questions about the correspondence itself.
How CELPIP Reading Part 2 is scored
One point per question, computer-scored, no penalty for a wrong answer, out of the Reading test's 38 scored questions. Part 2 is the smallest of the four parts, but it is also the fastest to bank if you are systematic, which makes it a good place to buy time back for Part 4.
CELPIP Reading Part 2 strategies
- Read the message first, not the diagram. The message tells you what you are looking for; the diagram is a lookup table, not a text.
- Do not read the diagram end to end. Scan to the row, column or label you actually need. Reading it like prose is how people lose four minutes here.
- Watch for the near-miss detail. Diagram questions are built on things that are almost right: the adjacent time slot, the neighbouring room, the other price tier.
- Check the constraint in the message before you commit. "After 5pm", "under $50", "only on weekends". The answer is usually a filter, not a fact.
- Keep an eye on the ~9 minutes. This is the shortest part; the timer runs out faster than people expect.
Common CELPIP Reading Part 2 mistakes
- Reading the whole diagram before reading the message, which wastes the part's tightest resource: time.
- Grabbing the first matching row without applying the constraint stated in the message.
- Losing your place when scanning between two panes, and then answering from the wrong row.
Tip: Treat the diagram as a database and the message as the query. Read the message, decide exactly which cell you need, then go and get it. Candidates who read the diagram first almost always read too much of it.
