What is CELPIP Reading Part 1?
You read a short personal or professional message, such as an email between friends or a note from a building manager, and then answer questions about it. Then you complete a reply to that message by choosing the best word or phrase for each blank.

The first six questions test what the writer means: their purpose, their tone, what they are implying. The final five are a different skill entirely, closer to a cloze exercise, where you pick the word that fits the sense and the register of the reply.
How CELPIP Reading Part 1 is scored
Every question is worth one point and is computer-scored. The whole Reading section has 38 scored questions, so Part 1 alone is roughly a quarter of your Reading level, which makes it the highest-value part on the paper.
Each part runs on its own timer, and you cannot go back to a part once it has advanced. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is always the worst possible choice.
The paraphrase rule that decides CELPIP Reading Part 1
This is official, and it is the single most useful sentence Paragon has published about Reading: you should "never expect the correct answer choice to be stated in the very same words" as the passage.
The answer that reuses the passage's exact vocabulary is disproportionately the distractor. The correct answer restates the idea in different words. If you are word-matching, you are being farmed.
CELPIP Reading Part 1 strategies
- Read for the writer's purpose first. Why are they writing? What do they want to happen? Most of the six comprehension questions hang off that.
- Watch tone and implication, not just facts. This part rewards reading between the lines more than the other three do.
- For the reply blanks, read the whole sentence, and often the sentence after it, before choosing. The blanks test grammar, collocation and register.
- Keep the reply consistent with the original message. The reply has a relationship to the sender, and the right word choice usually depends on it.
- Watch the clock: about 11 minutes. The part advances on its own, and you cannot return.
Common CELPIP Reading Part 1 mistakes
- Picking the answer that echoes the passage's exact wording, against Paragon's explicit warning.
- Treating the reply blanks as pure grammar. Several are decided by tone and meaning, not by which word is grammatically legal.
- Over-spending on the first six questions and rushing the five blanks, which are worth the same one point each.
