Dear Mr. Pike, My sister and I are hoping to rent your seaside saltbox house near Twillingate for the last three weeks of June. I came across your listing online, and the photos are simply beautiful. Waking up to the open Atlantic right outside the window would be a wonderful change from our noisy street in the city. I can practically taste the salt on the breeze already! I have heard that the water off this coast stays icy well into the summer and that swimming is rarely a good idea. Is that so? Your listing mentions that great icebergs drift right past the point in June, and the pictures show visitors bundled up in thick jackets on the tour boats. I had assumed June would be mild, so those heavy coats surprised me. We were picturing long, lazy afternoons out on the deck, wrapped in nothing heavier than a sweater. Something else I have read is that Newfoundland can be battered by fierce storms, and I keep thinking about the enormous blizzard that buried St. John's in January 2020. I learned that some households were snowed in for the better part of a week, with the power gone the whole time. How does anyone manage without electricity for that long? It is beyond me. In a fix like that, what do you do for food and hot coffee, for heat and clean water? Do you keep emergency supplies on hand in the house? I honestly cannot imagine snowdrifts higher than the door! Still, the sea in a gale must be a spectacular thing to watch from a warm kitchen. We also love to sample whatever a place is famous for, and I have read that Newfoundland is proud of its cod tongues, toutons, and fish chowder. Online I found one little spot, too humble to call a restaurant, named The Dory Shack, which is supposed to be just a short drive from the house. It offers two things worth ordering, a plate of pan-fried cod and a bowl of thick chowder. Would you recommend The Dory Shack, or are we better off driving into town for a proper meal?
